NMB parking lot argument ends in gunfire

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) An exchange of heated words in the parking lot of a North Myrtle Beach hotel ended with a deadly gunshot.

A 39-year-old male victim was in the parking lot on the north side of the Bay Watch Resort located at 2701 South Ocean Boulevard around 3 a.m. Friday morning when he was confronted by another man who was standing on a 6th floor balcony.

According to North Myrtle Beach spokesperson Pat Dowling, after some heated words were exchanged, the man from the balcony left his room and came down to the parking lot to confront the victim.

The man walked towards the victim while pointing a hand gun. The victim then grabbed the gun and the two men began to struggle over the weapon, adds Dowling.

The victim was able to strike the armed man in the face, knocking him backwards. Officials say the gunman dropped his phone as he ran from the parking lot on to the beach.

The victim then called 911 and began to follow the subject on to the sand. The victim and two separate witnesses saw the man, gun in hand, run knee deep into the ocean and shoot himself in the head, reports Dowling.

The victim and witnesses pulled the subject from the ocean and started CPR, however, the man did not survive the self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Dowling says the gunman has not been identified except to say he was approximately 30 to 40 years old from Pickerington, OH. The cause of the original argument or motive for the confrontation has not been released by police.

Authorities have listed this incident as a suicide - assault and battery second degree.
