Horry Electric equipment failure causes power outage

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) An equipment failure within an Horry Electric substation has left more than 1,500 customers without power Thursday morning.

Penlope Hinson, Horry Electric Spokesperson, says more than 1,500 members are currently impacted by an outage out of the Burgess substation. Equipment will have to be replaced, but crews are currently working on a plan to reroute electricity from another source.

Community members in the affected area say traffic lights have also been affected. Drivers have reported on the WMBF News Facebook page that several stop lights on Hwy 707 and Holmestown Road are disabled, causing a few traffic tie-ups.

Hinson says the entire substation in the Burgess community will have to be replaced, and there is no word on how long it will take to get power restored to that area.

Updates are currently being posted to the Horry Electric outage webpage.
