SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) An infant's mother was arrested in Surfside Beach Monday morning after the child was found wandering alone on a busy street.

Mike Frederick, Surfside Beach Police Chief, says officer arrested 30-year-old Bonnie Anne Barrows, after an Horry County Sheriff's Deputy spotted a young child walking along 10th Avenue South in Surfside Beach.

Frederick says that deputy radioed Surfside Beach officers for assistance, and those officers canvassed the neighborhood, located Barrows in a third-floor apartment half a block away and inquired why the child was walking in the busy road alone.

Barrows could not explain how the child left the apartment. She was arrested and charged with child neglect.

The arrest warrant for Barrows says the child was found in the street with a soiled diaper, and Barrows was passed out on the couch in her apartment when police located her.

As a precaution, the child was transported to Waccamaw Community Hospital to treat apparent bruising. The SC Department of Social Services was contacted to arrange care for the child.

Barrows will appear before a judge Monday afternoon for a bond hearing.
