Clemson University wide receiver Sammy Watkins and men's soccer player Amadou-Tidiane Daniel Dia were arrested early Friday morning, officials say.

Employees with Clemson's media relations department say Watkins and Dia, both 18, were arrested on drug-related charges. Both are being charged with simple possession of marijuana. In addition, Watkins faces a possession of a controlled substance charge. All of the charges are misdemeanors.

Officials say the arrest came after a university police officer saw the car Watkins was driving scrape against a curb on campus and pulled him over in a parking lot off Commons Court. The temporary license tag was also not lit.

When the officer came up to the car, he smelled marijuana. A search turned up two pills that Watkins didn't have a prescription for and the marijuana.  An incident report identifies the pills as Adderall and Vyvanse, classified as Schedule II drugs.

Those pills are prescribed for ADHD.

The student-athletes have since been released from custody. Watkins is out on a $1,620 bond and Dia on a $620 bond.

The Clemson athletic office released a statement on Friday which included a statement from Watkins, which said "I made a mistake last night and I am truly sorry for my action. I let the team down, the coaches down and this University down. I will learn from this. I will accept any discipline Coach Swinney and the University issues."

Dabo Swinney also made a statement saying ""I am aware of the arrest last night.  I am mad and hurt by the poor decision that Sammy Watkins made.  He is a good young man who has been a model student, citizen, player and teammate.  This is a reminder that good people make poor decisions.  But, there are consequences for your actions...and there will be in this case. I am in the process of gathering the facts and discipline will be determined when I have completed that process."

Watkins burst on the scene for the Tigers as a Freshman last season catching 82 passes for 1,219 yards and 12 touchdowns. He broke 11 Freshman records at the school and was named an AP All-American, just the third Freshman in history to accomplish the feat. He's considered as one of the favorites for this year's Heisman Trophy.
