TWC officials explain cable, internet outages

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Viewers across the Grand Strand, and the state, experienced cable and internet outages Sunday afternoon, and now Time Warner Cable officials are speaking up about the cause.

WMBF viewers and Time Warner Cable customers from the Myrtle Beach, Forestbrook, Little River and Carolina Forest areas reported their internet and cable services were interrupted for nearly two hours Sunday afternoon. Some residents in the Pee Dee say they were also affected.

One WMBF News viewer reported this outage kept them from doing business, and credit card readers would not work.

The cable company acknowledged the issues for South Carolina customers on their Twitter account, saying, 'Attention South Carolina customers: We're currently investigating a service outage.'

Late Sunday, a representative with Time Warner Cable's customer care team said this about the outage via twitter: "I've heard no definitive answer. Judging by the size of the outage my guess is a fiber cut. But again, that's just a guess."

Rose Dangerfield, spokesperson for Time Warner Cable, tells WMBF News Tuesday that the outage in service for customers state-wide was caused by a power outage at the cable company's hub in Forest Acres, and the failure of a backup generator.

Robert Yanity, spokesperson for SC Electric and Gas, says it was a tree fallen on a power line that services the Time Warner Cable hub that left TWC customers without media connections for about an hour and a half Sunday afternoon.
