Judge grants bond for man charged with killing wife in front of kid

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) -

A judge issued a $500,000 bond to the man accused of killing his wife in front of their 4-year-old daughter last year.

Chesley Jones Black, 30, is charged with murder after Charleston County Sheriff's Office investigators say he killed 25-year-old Amanda Kalman at their Fife Lane home in West Ashley last September.

"I spent some time  trying to come up with a statement and to me it stands to reason that someone capable of performing an act of violence this brutal is capable of doing almost anything," Kalman's uncle, Don Gresh, said during the bond hearing.

Black's public defender, Megan Ehrlich, told Judge Markley Dennis that the murder suspect is actually the victim in the case.

"In his statement, he puts her as the aggressor in the situation," Ehrlich said."And that he, multiple times, tried to get out of it prior to it really getting bad with the knife. She had charged him with the knife is the statement he gave to the police."

Kalman's uncle said his family may have to move if Black gets out of jail.

"We were family and he knows where I work, he knows where my wife works, knows where the girls go to school," Gresh said."And we would be in constant fear that at some point in time he shows up, god only knows what will happen."

After hearing from all sides, the judge put Black's bond at $500,000. He will have to pay $50,000 to get out of jail.

If Black manages to post bond, the judge ordered him to be under house arrest and under strict satellite monitoring. He also said black can't come within 20 miles of Amanda Kalman's uncle's home.

Investigators say Black and Kalman's 4-year-old daughter told them her parents were arguing and fighting inside the home when her father stabbed and killed her mother.

The couple's 2-year-old daughter was also in the home at the time of the murder, investigators say.  Sheriff Al Cannon said after the murder, Black dropped off his 4-year-old at Kalman's sister's house before fleeing Charleston County with the 2-year-old.

Black was arrested days later by deputies in Sumter County after they found him with his daughter.

A Charleston County detective says Black, who had already been denied bond once, has already confessed to killing his wife.
