Man charged again after 'ecstacy' pills turn out to be bath salts

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A man arrested on drug and weapons charges in December after a traffic stop in downtown Charleston is facing another charge after pills found in his vehicle were determined to be made of bath salts.

Charleston Police Department officers pulled over a 2007 dark green GMC Yukon near the corner of King and Calhoun streets just before 2 a.m. on Dec. 14 last year, after watching the driver make an illegal lane change across a solid white line.

Officers said as soon as they approached the car, they could detect the smell of marijuana coming from the SUV. Both occupants in the car admitted to smoking marijuana inside the Yukon earlier in the day, but they didn't have drugs on them.

Police said they frisked both men and discovered .95 of an ounce of marijuana, valued at $280, hidden in the groin and buttocks area of the driver, Christopher Price. Police said they also found a bag containing 34 pink and blue pills which Price said was MDMA, also known as ecstacy.

Following a drug analysis at the Forensic Services Division at Charleston Police Department, the pills were determined to contain the schedule 1 drug MDPV, or bath salts.

Analysts valued the drugs at $510.

Police also found a gun in the glove box, which Price claimed. He also admitted to being convicted of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

He is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the transport of marijuana, possession and possession of a firearm by convicted violent felon.
