Family releases photo of girl killed in Hwy 501 crash
A spokesperson for the Myrtle Beach family who lost their 4-year-old daughter in a weekend car crash shared this photo of the young girl with WMBF News.
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A spokesperson for the Myrtle Beach family who lost their 4-year-old daughter in a crash this weekend is sharing a picture of the little girl.
Jada Bennett, 4, was killed in a Hwy 501 crash Saturday, and just as local businesses come together to coordinate fundraisers for the family, a photo of the young girl is released.
Two people injured in the accident that took the life of the young girl are out of the hospital, according to a spokesperson for the girl's family.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol cleared the scene of the accident on Highway 501 Saturday. All lanes of Highway 501 near Waccamaw Pines drive reopened at 8:15 p.m. several hours after the accident occurred.
According to the agency's website, the accident occurred on Highway 501 in front of the Tanger Outlets shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday.
Lance Corporal Sonny Collins said a tractor trailer was headed northbound on Highway 501 and approaching an intersection when it rear-ended a Land Rover, which struck a minivan.
Collins said that four patients were transported to area hospitals, and a passenger in the Land Rover was pronounced dead on scene.
Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler said the passenger was a child, identified as four-year-old Jada Bennett of Myrtle Beach.
An autopsy performed Sunday morning determined that the child died from a head injury causing massive trauma.
"You could see this car that's literally a paper ball after the accident. A big Land Rover I believe it was and now it's a paper ball," said Libbie Larrimore, who went to the scene after she heard the accident from across the street.
An official with Horry County Fire Rescue told the WMBF News crew on scene that another child was transported by helicopter to MUSC. Three adults were transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center by ambulance with significant injuries.
A representative speaking on behalf of Bennett's family tells WMBF News the girl's father and sibling were out of the hospital as of Monday evening.
The left northbound lane in the accident area opened just before 6 p.m.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate this accident with their accident reconstruction team. Lance Cpl Sonny Collins said no charges have been filed at this time pending the conclusion of their investigation.
Larrimore and other drivers say this accident highlights the dangers of Highway 501.
"The traffic is just, people are always in a rush and nobody wants to pay attention," said Angela Gibbs.
Many drivers say one of their biggest worries is the number of large trucks that drive 501 often.
A bill is pending in Congress that would increase the load an eighteen-wheeler can carry.
"The bigger trucks you put on the road is a bigger risk to have. It's very unsafe. Their brakes you know they run on an air brakes system, they can lock their brakes up. They can't really slow down properly," said Larrimore.
Zumba Fitness of Myrtle Beach has planned a fundraiser for the Bennett family on Saturday, April 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Surfside Bowling Center. Visit their website for more information about donations.
Another group in the Myrtle Beach community is collecting food and gifts to create Easter baskets for Jada Bennett's two surviving siblings. They will also be collecting donations to supplement funeral costs, and matching all donations received, up to $500. For more information about the event, click here.
