Coach Bennett not joining race for 7th District

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Former head CCU football coach David Bennett tells WMBF News that he will not be joining to the long list of contenders vying for the newly created 7th Congressional seat.

His years of success and local popularity would lead some to believe he should run for the seat, but Bennett has chosen not to file.

Bennett was the only head football coach at Coastal Carolina since the football program had its first season in 2003. His record was 63-39, but just 29-28 over the past five seasons and 15-12 in the Big South Conference. He also led CCU to Big South championships four times, including the Big South's only NCAA at-large playoff berth in 2006 and was named the league's Coach of the Year twice.

Prior to becoming the head football coach at CCU, Bennett was the head football coach at Catawba College for seven years.
