Police: Man asks to cash in pennies in Darlington robbery

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) A Darlington man used a handful of pennies to persuade a store clerk to open the cash register in a reported strong armed robbery Wednesday night.

According to Sgt. Kimberly Nelson, Public Information Officer for the Darlington Police Department, around 10:43 p.m. Tuesday a suspect walked into the Markette at 104 Cashua Ferry Road in the City of Darlington and asked the clerk for a quarter in exchange for some pennies.

When the clerk opened the cash register, the subject reached in and grabbed an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene.

Officers searched the area but the subject could not be located. The Darlington County dog team assisted in the search.

Police say the suspect, 38-year-old Levance Addison III, turned himself into Darlington City Officers Thursday without incident.

The subject was transported to Darlington County Detention Center where he awaits a bond hearing.
