Woman dies in crash involving ATV near Darlington

Posted: Updated:
DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) -- A woman died in a car accident in Darlington County Saturday. South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers believe an all terrain vehicle (ATV) caused the accident.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified the woman as Mary Frances Williams, 54, of Darlington.

SCHP Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said at around 5 p.m. Williams was driving a 1992 Geo car south on Society Hill Road just outside Darlington City limits. Jones said the accident happened when an ATV traveling east on Watkins Drive came into the intersection with Society Hill Road in front of the Darlington Packing company. Jones said Williams swerved to avoid the ATV and hit a pick-up truck head-on.

The driver of the pick-up was not hurt. Jones said Stuart Berry, 37 , left the area, but he was later found.

Berry is now charged with felony DUI and leaving the scene of a collision with death.

Jones said an 8-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy were in the car with Williams. Their last name was also Williams. The children survived the crash Jones said.
