Florence man charged with manslaughter following friend's death

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) A Florence man is charged with voluntary manslaughter following an altercation with an acquaintance in Florence on Tuesday.

Major Carlos Raines, spokesperson for Florence City Police Department, told WMBF News that two men got into an verbal altercation at a residence on Charlotte Street in Florence on March 8.

During the altercation, Robert Lee Brown, 61, of Florence, threatened to hit his friend, Gene A. Johnson, 63, also of Florence.

Brown struck Johnson, who fell to the ground and never got up. Brown tried to help Johnson but could not, Raines said, and later called EMS. Johnson was taken to a local hospital where he later died from what an autopsy determined to be blunt force trauma.

Raines said that Robert Lee Brown, was arrested Tuesday afternoon by investigators. Brown is charged with voluntary manslaughter.
