(AP) — Devontea Washington scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half as Hartsville defeated Southside 69-56 in the Class 3A boys state championship game Saturday night. It was the Red Foxes' first state title and only their second trip to the finals. Their other appearance was in 1952. Hartsville coach Aric Samuel, who played at the school in the 1990s, also won a state title with Hunter-Kinard-Tyler in 2005. Jaylen Shaw added 14 points to lead the Red Foxes (23-6), who overcame foul trouble to Shaw and Tevin Prescott in the third quarter to extend their six-point halftime lead. The Tigers got within five early in the third quarter, but the Hartsville bench sparked a 15-3 run to push the lead back into double digits.
