CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A Florence man that pleaded guilty to faking his own death and making child pornography has been sentenced to spend two decades in jail.

The trial for 60-year-old Harvey Cox took place in Charleston in the spring of 2012, where he pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and causing a rescue mission without reason.

The US States Attorney's Office says Cox has been sentenced to spend 20 years in prison for those crimes, followed by a lifetime of supervised release. He must also pay $51,094.25 in restitution to the United States Coast Guard.

Cox was reported missing on January 18, 2011 after the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources received a distress call from a local fisherman who came across Cox's empty boat. His identification and the keys to his truck were located in a plastic bag.

SCDNR then requested the assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard to search for Cox. Over the course of two days, the Coast Guard spent $51,094.25 in resources to find him

According to an affidavit, investigators received information on Jan. 27 from Cox's son that he had spoken with his father twice on the phone since his alleged disappearance.

Because of the information presented to them, and with their knowledge of Cox being investigated for various sex crimes in Florence and Marlboro counties, the Coast Guard stated Cox "knowingly and willfully caused the United States Coast Guard to attempt to save a life and property when no help was needed."
