Smoke from Sandy Island controlled burn travels north

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Many residents across the Grand Strand are smelling and seeing smoke Thursday afternoon as the Nature Conservancy works a controlled burn on Sandy Island.

Tom Dooley, State Fire Manager with the Nature Conservancy, told WMBF News units have been burning along Sandy Island for the past three days. The fire Thursday afternoon reached about 500 acres and will be the last they will do for the week.

Residents reported on the WMBF News Facebook page they could see and smell smoke in the Murrells Inlet and Garden City areas as well as up toward Highway 17 and Highway 544.

A hint of smoke could also be detected all the way up toward Highway 17 and Highway 501.

Dooley said more controlled burns will take place next week further south.
