HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Palmetto Point Grab N' Go complex is just days away from opening, as neighbors react to its close proximity to their homes.
The developer is hoping to open within the first week of March. Right now he is waiting for the county to inspect the building.
After that, merchandise will start coming in and being stacked on shelves. Road work along Palmetto Pointe Boulevard has also been going on to put in acceleration and deceleration lanes to make it easier to get into the new development.
The developer said he is looking through nearly 40 applications for positions at the new store. He added that most of those applications came from those who live near the new complex.
Some neighbors are in favor of the new complex while others are opposed. Mary Watson said, "I must say as work progresses on the bypass, and traffic becomes more and more of a nightmare…it is nice to know in an emergency I could go across the road and grab a loaf of bread or jug of milk."
Others said the $2 million dollar complex is not something they want to see out their back window. Mary Scaparro said, "I'm very disappointed. We used to have deer and wildlife, and now we have nothing. I look at the cars going by because there is no more privacy here."
Some say the noise during construction has also created problems for the community. Scaparro added, "Noise starts at 5. That is when they begin with the trucks. The dog starts barking like crazy."
Some said even though the new lanes were put in along Palmetto Pointe Boulevard, they are skeptical about what the traffic flow will be like. Scaparro added, "Traffic was bad before, but now a lot more accidents pulling in and out of the gas station for everybody."
Watson added, "As long as the traffic flows smoothly then I shouldn't think it will be a problem."
