CONWAY, SC (WMBF) A committee hearing held in Columbia Wednesday morning on a controversial bill could change how your county handles your trash.
Employees of the Horry County Solid Waste Authority and concerned citizens voiced their opinions at the hearing at the statehouse. They weren't the only ones, as five Horry County Council members sent out a letter asking for your support for flow control. But state legislators say Horry County can't force you to come to Conway to take care of your trash.
In the letter written by some of the Horry County Council, some members say the "Business Freedom to Choose Act" is an attack on how Horry County does trash. Members say they need your help to fight the assault from out-of-state waste companies on the county. They say the bill will cause you to pay more for the services to get rid of your trash.

Those in favor of the bill say the ordinance is bad for business and economic development, since it won't let businesses choose for themselves where to get rid of their trash and how much to pay.
As for some of the claims from people against the bill, from higher prices to more trash piling in from other states, some state legislators want you to not believe the hype.
"I'm trying to see where that connects," said Representative Thad Viers. "I think that's one of these red herrings that really doesn't have any place in the discussion. I think that's just something in there that has a potential scare tactic to get people up in arms."
Viers also says there's a lot of support in Columbia for this bill right now - 63 representatives have signed on and he's confident it will make it through the House of Representatives.
