DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) A teen missing from the Darlington area since 2009 and believed to be in Mexico has been located and returned to her family, according to investigators.
Sgt. Kimberly Nelson with the Darlington Police Department said Sable Alexis Shelton, now 16, disappeared in October of 2009 with her mother, Melissa Ann Butler and Juan "Angel" Calderon. Police believed they went to Mexico as Calderon was wanted out of Darlington County for a charge of criminal sexual conduct.
U.S. Marshals were asked to assist in the search for Shelton, who was described as a white female standing 5'5" and weighing about 150 pounds at the time of her disappearance. He had brown hair and hazel eyes.
On Feb. 12, Shelton was located by border patrol agents in El Paso, TX attempting to leave Mexico because of Calderon's violent behavior, Nelson said. She told agents her mother helped her escape.
Shelton was reunited with her family in Darlington on Saturday.
Nelson said the Darlington Police Department wanted to thank the U.S. Marshall Service, the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children and the Darlington County Department of Social Services for their help in locating Shelton.
