CONWAY, SC (WMBF) A Galivants Ferry woman is behind bars Monday morning after allegedly taking a child to an emergency room while intoxicated.

According to a police report obtained by WMBF News, officers with the Conway Police Department responded to the ER at Conway Medical Center around 7 p.m. Sunday evening in reference to an intoxicated person.

When they arrived, officers were told by hospital officials that 39-year-old Melissa Dawn Garbade was drunk and trying to leave the ER with a 3-year-old, but was stopped by hospital security.

Officers found Garbade yelling at everyone in the ER lobby, according to the report. Garbade was reportedly slurring her words and she had droopy eyes. Officers stated Garbade admitted to driving to the ER with her child while drunk, however, officers could not locate Garbade's vehicle and no one saw her driving.

Garbade was detained by police and charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and unlawful neglect of a child. The Department of Social Services was contacted and picked up Garbade's 21-year-old child who agreed to take custody of the toddler, the report stated.

Garbade was then transported to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center where she remains at this time.
