COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - For the second straight year, the Gamecocks start a new season as the reigning national champs. But you won't find this team resting on their laurels and their past successes.
"We know we have the target on our backs, but I think we use it more of motivation than saying like, 'Oh I hope we don't to lose our spot,' or 'I hope we don't lose our number one spot.' Anything like that," said first baseman Christian Walker. "Let's go out and show people why we're number one."
"We have to go out there and act like we haven't won," said pitcher Matt Price "We got a new team and new guys to fill those spots and we can't just be like, 'Oh yeah we won the past two years. We can lay down and the other team is just gonna fold.'"
"You have to approach each game individually," said outfielder Adam Matthews. "Just come out here with the mentality that you're going to win each pitch, each inning."
"You don't ever want to lose your last game. It's special," said pitcher Michael Roth. "I think Scott, and all those guys from last year will always remember their last college game was a win. I would love to have that feeling too."
