SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WYFF) A Spartanburg County woman is accused of putting a dog in a trash bag and then putting it in the trash can outside on trash pickup day.

Nancy Jeanne Smythe is charged with ill treatment of animals.

Jamie Nelson, with Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement, said the trash company was picking up trash this morning when a worker found a dog in a trash can underneath some trash.

Nelson said the worker brought the dog to the house where the trash can was and that Smythe denied that it was hers.

He said Smythe later admitted that the dog belonged to her, and animal control officers were called.

According to Nelson, while animal control officers were on the way, Smythe put the dog in a trash bag and put it back in the trash can. Nelsen said she hid it under some other bags of trash and an animal control officer found the dog in the bag.

The dog, an 8-year-old black and white Shih Tzu, is fine, other than a previously existing skin disorder. The dog is now being taken to a shelter.

Nelson said officials will be contacting the Solicitor's Office to see if the charge can be upgraded to a felony.
