MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) A 6-year-old Myrtle Beach boy received a big honor Thursday from state lawmakers in efforts to turn what most consider a tragedy into a learning tool for the entire state.

Craven Christian Hopper was born with a congenital heart defect. It's the number one cause of birth defect related deaths worldwide.

Craven survived, but he's already had three open heart surgeries in his short life.

To bring awareness to the disease, South Carolina state lawmakers recognized Hopper with a resolution.

The young boy traveled to the state house on Thursday with Representative Alan Clemmons to be named the 2012 South Carolina Congenital Heart Defect Ambassador.

"Its obviously an honor for Craven and our family, but just to be able to represent the CHD [congenital heart defect] community and get some awareness out there and to let people know that this is much more common than you think," explains Hopper's mom Candice Stone.

The resolution that passed last week also declares Feb. 14 as South Carolina Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day.
