SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) A Surfside Beach man remains behind bars Tuesday after allegedly hitting a woman and driving drunk with a 7-year-old in the backseat Sunday.
According to a police report obtained by WMBF News, officers with the Surfside Beach Police Department responded to an area along Myrtle Drive South in reference to a domestic violence call. While en route, officers spotted a black SUV leaving the scene and were advised it was the suspect's vehicle.
Officers then initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, Joshua Daniel Bell, 27, who had a 7-year-old child in the backseat, the report said. The report further stated officers could sense a strong odor of alcohol on Bell. When asked what happened earlier, he allegedly told officers he and the victim were arguing but never became physical.
At that time, officers arrested Bell and transported him to the Surfside Beach Police Department, where he then refused to give a breath sample, officers said.
The victim told officers Bell hit her in the nose and scratched her back in an attempt to remove her prescription pain medication patch. She said Bell tried to lock her and a child inside the bathroom to prevent her from calling the police. Officers observed marks consistent with her story.
She was able to flee the scene with a 2-year-old child and went next door to call the police, the report said.
While the victim was away from the home, Bell allegedly left the scene with the 7-year-old, leaving a 17-month-old child home alone.
Bell has been charged with driving under suspension, DUI, child endangerment, unlawful neglect of a child and criminal domestic violence, high and aggravated.
Bond was set at $52,717 and he remains incarcerated at this time.
