NMB school trades in 'lighthouse' for new mascot

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (AP) A Horry County school has answered the question "How do you cheer for a lighthouse?" with the resounding answer: You don't.

Students at North Myrtle Beach Intermediate School have been desperate for a new mascot to replace the lighthouse logo that had been representing the school.

Melissa Spearman, the new principal at the school, said the formal process of getting a new mascot involves some red tape. But she got around that by discovering that an old nickname had never been officially discarded.

So, students at the school can now proudly call themselves the Braves.

School advisory board member Mary Gail Stanaland says it's not just a superficial matter, because schools can design an entire philosophy around a good mascot.
