CONWAY, SC (WMBF) Horry County Fire and Rescue Hazmat teams were assisting an Horry County Police investigation in a situation on Old Reaves Ferry Road Saturday that closed one lane of traffic for some time.
Horry County Police said the situation turned into a death investigation and was later deemed a suicide. Police have not explained what caused concerns about hazardous materials affecting others in the area that created the need for the hazmat team and further information has not been provided.
A perimeter was set up in the area as officers investigated. One lane was closed to traffic to allow emergency vehicles to enter the area, but that lane has been reopened. Access to the boat landing was also blocked by land.
The scene caused alarm in those driving by along Old Reaves Ferry Road. Some are shocked an incident would happen so close to home. Joe Willard from Conway, said, "I come down here all the time...since I was three years old. It's a lot of fun. It's quiet out here, and this is a tragedy."
Willard along with others are hopeful law enforcement will get to the bottom of what happened. Willard added, "Sure they will. They've got enough people. They will figure out something."
