Ambulance driver ticketed for running red light

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – An ambulance driver from Sampson County is stuck with a $50 fine after driving through a red light in Wilmington with a patient on board.

Don Comer is upset because he doesn't think the ticket should be his responsibility.

According to Don Bennett, Traffic Engineer for the City of Wilmington, their protocol for emergency vehicles is to send the video and images they record to the driver's supervisor.

In this case, the supervisor of the Sampson County Emergency Management decided the driver was in violation of proper procedure because the emergency lights were not turned on. He told the city to send the ticket to Comer's house.

Comer has worked for emergency management for over thirty years and he thinks he should not be responsible for paying the ticket.

The supervisor did not return our calls.

Comer has an option to appeal the ticket, but he says he will pay it sometime this week.
