Socastee lacrosse team continues to grow

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The sport of lacrosse's popularity is sky rocketing along the Grand Strand over the last few years.

"We started playing about six years ago at Socastee High School, and since then it's grown from almost 20 teams to 40 teams in the state," said Socastee head coach Matt Fox.

On Monday, Socastee High School's lacrosse team held their first practice of 2012 and over forty kids suited up.

It's the fast paced nature of the sport that draws some of the grand strand's best athletes, like Tyler Keane, who also doubles as Myrtle Beach High School's quarterback in the fall.

"I use a lot of the strength and conditioning programs from football to help me out in lacrosse.  They help me out with my moves and stuff, like spin dodges and all that," said Keane.

You may wonder how someone from Myrtle Beach can play for Socastee, well the team is open to kids from Socastee, St. James, Myrtle Beach and Carolina Forest High Schools.

Making rivalries in other sports pretty interesting.

"When we got to other sports, say a basketball game or a football game, we're rivals, but on the lacrosse field we definitely come together as a team," said Joey Lazaroff, a senior on the team.

While the sport is very young in the grand strand the talent level is quickly on the rise, and college programs are beginning to take notice

"The past three, four years I've had four or five guys go to college on scholarships," said Fox.

As lacrosse in the Grand Strand continues to grow and battle for respect, the team knows a great way to earn some would be a strong season in 2012.

The city of Myrtle Beach is adapting lacrosse as well.  The city began a youth lacrosse program three years ago to teach the game to kids age 7-15, and Myrtle Beach will host a nationwide 44 team tournament in May.
