CDC using reward card records to track food illnesses

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) It's the serial number and barcode on the back of these reward cards that leaves a trail, one the Center for Disease Control says if they can follow, will help save lives when it comes to food illness outbreaks.

Food Officials say they've been using this method more in the past several years. But it brings up the question of allowing the government to use an already put together resource- because when you sign up for reward cards, stores are able to profile your shopping habits. And although food officials are taking a peak at what you've been buying, they say it is completely confidential.

They say nothing is sold to the government, and the situation determines the type of search. Sometimes they only look at what's been purchased at a specific period of time. But it does come down to consent- the grocery store company or the person who is sick has to give permission to look at the records.

"It's up to them to choose whether or not to give their shopper card number," said Casey Barton Behravesh, an epidemiologist with the CDC. "We explain we take their privacy very seriously and we keep all that information confidential and what we're finding out confidential.

Sometimes the CDC is able to get the information from grocery stores, and other times they can only get the information from people who have gotten sick. Some stores take matter into their own hands, by using reward card information to contact customers themselves about any food in question.
