CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee is working to change what you see as you drive along 501 Business into Conway. The committee plans to transform gateways for a better "welcome" into certain areas of Horry County.
With the new eight thousand dollar Palmetto Pride grant, the city of Conway will be a "test spot". Once the work is done at three different entrance areas in the city, the hope is the project will show what a difference a little greenery will make for drivers. Those who are visiting, and those who live in Horry County say it will make the area stand out more.
"It could use a little impact as you come in," said tourist Donna White. "I'm finding out that Conway is a very historical place, for the state. And there's not a punch to say here I am. Here we are."
The committee wants to branch out to all gateways and certain highways in Horry County, like sprucing up the entire stretch of 501 from Myrtle Beach into Conway, and parts of Highway 9, 17, and 22. But the problem is not having the money to take on the beautification projects. The newly formed committee has been working since June, only with grants, but it's looking to get more support from Horry County and the community in the future.
The Keep Horry County Beautiful Committee has been working with the Horry County Planning Department to determine what landscapes will fit best in certain areas. But now it's just a matter of securing those funds before members can plant the seeds.
