The man accused of shooting a North Charleston police officer remains behind bars Monday.
Timothy Darrell Johnson faced a judge Sunday, along with two other men police say are connected to the crime. Johnson is facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm,
possession of a stolen firearm and assaulting police while resisting
Johnson was denied bond for his role in the shooting of North Charleston police officer David Winslette on Saturday morning.
Court records say Johnson opened fire on Winslette around 3 a.m. Saturday as he was approaching him at the El Cheapo gas station at the intersection of Dorchester Road and South Allen Drive.
An affidavit say Winslette was leaving
the scene of a home theft on South Allen Drive earlier that morning when he spotted a man that fit the description at the El Cheapo gas station.
A spokesperson for the police department says that without warning, Johnson opened fire on the officer. Johnson allegedly fired four shots, hitting the officer twice; Once in the chest and once in the knee.
Winslette was taken to MUSC with non life threatening injuries. He remains in
the hospital and is listed in stable, but good condition. Winslette did not fire his
weapon during the incident.
Johnson fled the scene of the shooting and it was a little more than 12 hours later when he was arrested with two other men. Police have charged the other two men with accessory after the fact of attempted murder of a police officer.
Creiton Patterson and Dontreia Durant were given $200,000 surety bonds for their involvement in the crime.
Court affidavits say that Durant fled the scene of the El Cheapo gas station with Johnson early Saturday morning and came back to pick him up after they were separated.
Six North Charleston police officers showed support for Winslette at the bond court hearing. They stood together in the back of the room.
The suspects in the case all have a history of violence. A spokesperson for the
North Charleston police department said Sunday that Johnson has been convicted of crimes stemming back to
2005. That year, Johnson was arrested and charged with unlawful carry of
a weapon. Johnson received a minor in possession of alcohol in 2007 and
has a pending case of grand larceny from 2010.
Patterson was convicted of unlawfully carrying a weapon in 2008.
Durant has convictions on his record starting in 1997. Durant was
arrested an charged with two separate acts of grand larceny that year,
possession of crack and possession of a stolen vehicle.
In 2004, Durant was once again charged with possession of crack and a firearm.
