HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Horry County Police hope the public can give them the name of someone who attempted to sexually assault a woman in the Surfside Beach area Wednesday evening.
Sgt. Robert Kegler, spokesman for the Horry County Police Department, said a woman reported to police she was walking on the pathway of the abandoned golf course in the Deerfield area when she saw an unknown white male sitting at a pond.
When the suspect saw her, he called out for her to come over. At that time, she said she began to walk faster in an attempt to get away and the suspect began running toward her.
The victim said the suspect caught up to her and knocked her down, getting on top of her and slapping her in the face. When she was slapped, Kegler said the victim was able to kick the suspect in the groin and got away.
The suspect has been described as a white male standing 5'8" and weighing about 160 pounds. He has long, curly brown hair as well as a full beard and moustache.
Brandon and Shayna Thornsbury live in the Deerfield Links neighborhood near the golf course and say the incident has them reconsidering their safety.
"Knowing something like that could happen right behind your home, it's threatening," Shayna says.
Brandon says the couple has seen some crime in the neighborhood, as he says they were once the victims of a car break-in, but still can not believe such a violent crime occurred in broad daylight.
"I definitely won't let [my wife and daughter] walk alone there anymore," Brandon says.
Put in the victims position, Shayna says she would have been terrified.
"Just by chance she was strong enough to overcome [the attacker], or else it could have been a much worse story we're hearing," Shayna says.
