Man gets 5 years for Bennettsville church arson

BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - The man arrested in connection to a burglary and church arson in 2009 has been sentenced to prison time.

Jarrod Demario Hicks was 19 years old when he was arrested by Bennettsville Police in connection to the burning of the Word of Life Christian Center Ministries' gymnasium on West Main Street in 2009.

It took two years of investigation by the Bennettsville Police Department Investigative Division, SLED, the Bennettsville Fire Department, Marlboro County Probation, Parole and Pardon Services and the Marlboro County Solicitor's Office before he was considered a suspect, said Bennettsville Police Lt. Larry Turner.

In August 2013, Hicks was sentenced to spend five years behind bars, said Solicitor Will Rogers.
