HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) A few different
illnesses are making their way around the area this week.
At Seacoast Primary Care in Little River, Dr.
Ray Holt says he's seeing a lot of dry skin rashes.
He calls it "atopic dermatitis" and
says it's more common when the air gets dry and people take hot showers. Symptoms to look for include a dry, flaky red
rash, especially in areas where it is easy to scratch.
Dr. Holt says you should turn the shower
temperature down, use lots of moisturizing cream and don't scratch it because
it will make it worse. In some cases,
your doctor may prescribe steroid creams that cut down on itch to help the rash
heal.
At Grand Strand
Pediatrics, Dr. Nick Colvard says he's diagnosing a lot of croup right
now. He describes it as a sharp, barky
cough. Treatment includes humidified air
for mild cases, prescription steroids for moderate cases and possible
hospitalization in severe cases.
At Doctors Care in
Conway on Highway 501, physician's assistant Ashley Smith Wilson is seeing a lot of
acute bacterial sinusitis. Wilson says
symptoms include high fever, facial pain and swelling and even a decreased
sense of smell. Usually, the symptoms
last for more than 10 days. Wilson says
those suffering will need antibiotics and nasal steroids, as well as rest.
Dr. Ron Reynolds at
Beach Urgent Care says he's seeing a lot of "weekend warrior" injuries. He says the holidays and the unseasonably warm weather we have had mean a number of people
have been increasing their activity level to drop the increased weight.
Dr. Reynolds says it is very important to
keep in shape, but also be mindful to make sure that you loosen up prior to
these activities and that you can handle the activities you do participate
in.
If you do suffer an injury to an extremity that feels more significant
than a strain or if you get short of breath or have chest discomfort
while exercising, you should see a physician immediately.
