Fire out at Wellman Plastics Recycling in Johnsonville

Posted: Updated:

JOHNSONVILLE, SC (WMBF) What has been described as a small fire at a Florence County recycling plant has been extinguished, according to a company spokesperson.

Dispatchers with the Johnsonville Fire Department told WMBF News around 9:45 a.m. that units in Johnsonville were battling the fire at Wellman Plastics Recycling located at 520 Kingsburg Hwy.

Trip Carmichael, spokesman for Wellman Plastics Recycling, said the fire was small and occurred at 9:30 a.m. when some molten polyester leaked and was exposed to air.

According to Carmichael, the plant grinds soda bottles down and processes them through machinery that melts the polyester.

Charmichael said Johnsonville firefighters responded to the scene, but were not required to put the fire out. Plant workers were said to have put the fire out with a fire extinguisher.

Firefighters with the Williamsburg Fire Department and Hannah-Salem were on standby, according to dispatch.
