One candidate short, congressional hopefuls evaluate campaigns

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) With South Carolina State Representative Thad Viers out of the race for the 7th Congressional District seat, some candidates say they're reevaluating their campaign strategies.

Candidate Dick Withington said he was disappointed with the circumstances surrounding Viers' bowing out, but he sees the change in the political landscape.

"I was saddened to hear about it," said Withington. "But a candidate that's been reelected five times suddenly dropping out of the race, that's going to help me."

Not all the candidates vying for the title of US Congressman see one less candidate as having a major affect on the race at all. Mande Wilkes, who is also in the running, said many of the voters have already made up their minds as to who they'll vote for.

"There are so many candidates involved that if one drops out, I don't know if it will make a huge difference," Wilkes said.

In fact, Wilkes said Viers' leaving the race probably will not affect her standing in the polls at all.

"Representative Viers and I are very different candidates, so we were going after different voters," Wilkes added.
