What's Going Around? Jan. 4

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) A couple of different illnesses are making their way around the Grand Strand this week.

Doctor Ron Reynolds at Beach Urgent Care in the Galleria Shopping Center says he's seeing a lot of kids with pneumonia. Dr. Reynolds says parents need to be extra mindful because young kids don't know how to express their level of discomfort.  He says if your child has cough or cold symptoms for more than a week and trouble breathing, they should be seen by a doctor.  He says the usual treatment is antibiotics and fluids, but if severe enough, the illness can end with a hospital stay.

At Family Medicine of Sayebrook in Surfside, Dr. Karen Mahood is seeing a lot of gastrointestinal illnesses going around.  She says symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.  In some cases a fever is present, too.  Dr. Mahood recommends treating the symptoms by increasing intake of fluids and a bland diet - if symptoms persist it may be time to see the doctor for some IV fluids.

Dr. Ray Holt at Seacoast Primary Care in Little River says he's been seeing a lot of colds lately.  He says most patients, regardless of what they're seeing him for, also have a cold.  Symptoms are pretty general: runny noses, coughs and sneezing.  Dr. Holt says colds are almost always viral, so no antibiotic is necessary unless symptoms are severe or prolonged.  He recommends lots of fluids, cough suppressants and Tylenol for any pain.
