Turning on your car for a warm up in the mornings could be trouble

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Experts say leaving your car running, may have you running into trouble.  They say it really only takes 30 seconds for your car to start heating up. So instead of leaving your car idle, the best thing to do is to just start driving.

Mechanics say putting your car in drive speeds up the warming process. If you don't, sitting can mess up your car and your pocketbook. For every ten minutes of sitting, that's one less gallon of fuel in your tank, so you won't get the fuel mileage you're looking for. The idle time also affects the system, and creates an unnecessary build up of fuel. This is especially with cars made around the early two thousands, because cars know exactly how much fuel to put out.

Leaving your car running could leave you with no choice but to make a trip to the repair shop. "On the mornings that it's really cold, a few minutes isn't going to really hurt anything," said Adam Freeman with C&G Auto. "But if you do it for a long period of time, or over multiple instances, it can pose an issue that will lead to an expensive repair down the road."

Myrtle Beach Police say leaving your car running is illegal in the city, but it's up to the officer's discretion on whether to give you a ticket. One of the main problems is leaving it idle in public places- because it's an easy invitation for car theft.
