FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) Florence Police say one man is dead after an armed robbery went bad in the victim's home in Florence Sunday night.
Major Carlos Raines with the Florence Police Department has confirmed to WMBF News that a man was fatally shot in his home after multiple suspects forced their way into a single family home on Harmony Street.
The shooting happened a little before 8:30 Sunday night when three suspects began banging on the front door of a home on Harmony Street in Florence.
The daughter of the home owner opened the front door, and the suspects, at least one of them armed, forced their way into the residence.
Major Raines says the father of the home, who was in a back room of the house, was shot by one of the suspects. The home intruders fled the scene once the shot was fired.
The victim has been identified as Michael Hawkins, 49, of Florence. Florence County Coroner Don Reynolds says an autopsy is scheduled for late Monday morning, and Hawkins died from at least one gunshot wound.
Police say they are unsure if anything was actually stolen from the house during the crime, but they do believe robbery was the motive to the invasion.
Police are searching for three black males in connection to this case, and hope to provide a better physical description of the suspects and the get-a-way vehicle as the investigation continues.
