DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) Darlington County authorities arrested two Florence men on drug charges during a traffic stop Wednesday night after a brief chase that left one of the suspects in a small pond in attempts to flee from police.

According to Captain Andy Locklair with Darlington County Sheriff's Office, drug enforcement agents stopped a car Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m. on Woodbridge Rd in Darlington.

As agents were talking to the two occupants of the vehicle, drugs were discovered on both of them.

Officers arrested Anthony Gattison Jr., 21, and 20-year-old Antonio Anderson, both of Florence, on drug charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and possession of ecstasy. The drugs were in small quantities and packaged for sale.

After police discovered the drugs, Gattison attempted to flee the scene on foot, leading agents into a near by wooded area.

"Gattison was arrested after he ran into a small pond in the dark. He was in up to his knees before he gave up. Anderson at the same time tried to run as well but was stopped by agents before he could get away" said Sheriff Wayne Byrd.

Gattison is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and resisting arrest. Anderson is charged with possession of a scheduled one controlled substance. and resisting arrest.

Anderson and Gattison were transported to the Darlington County Detention Center and are awaiting bond.

Summer hasn't even technically started, yet the summer-like heat and humidity will continue to reach uncomfortable levels the next few days. We start off this morning with mugginess in the air. High temperatures reach near 87 along the Grand Strand but easily make it into the low 90s inland. The heat index will feel like 95 to 100 along the coast, but more like 102 to 105 inland.
