Input needed on allocation of funds in Horry County

CONWAY, SC - Horry County is receiving comments regarding housing and community development needs within the county's boundaries. The county anticipates receiving in excess of $1.85 million in FY 2012 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Over a period of five years, the total grant funds are expected to be in excess of $7.5 million. Citizens are asked to express their views on the allocation of these funds.

Input received will be considered by the County in developing the Annual Action Plan, which is part of the Five Year Consolidated Plan, to be submitted to HUD. The consolidated plan is the application for federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program funding and consists of a strategy to address the housing, homeless, and community development needs of our County. The County will be in the fifth year of the plan in 2012. The plan also includes an Annual Action Plan that identifies the actions to be taken in the coming year to implement the identified strategies.

Horry County Community Development Director Diana Seydlorsky says she hopes the funds can help residents affected by a down economy.

"You have people who have lost their jobs and their unemployment has run out, and those are the people we try to reach," Seydlorsky says.

Seydlorksy says Horry County hopes to use much of the money to help low income and elderly residents pay for home repairs they otherwise couldn't afford, but are still trying to decide what to do with much of the money.

Conway resident Mary Jo Hayes says she would like to see the money used to improve area schools.

"I'd like to see it go to schools.  I don't think some schools need to have portables, I think they need to have good in school structure," Hayes says.

Conway resident Denise Grissett says she wants to see more community programs for kids, as well as improved roads to help bring in new business.

"[To bring in] more grocery stores out in the rural areas like 905, [I'd like to] see areas like that grow," Grissett says.

All interested citizens of the County are invited to provide input on community needs. Citizens may:
