Horry County Schools push holiday break back

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) The Horry County School District pushed back its holiday break to make sure seats will be filled with students inside the classrooms, meaning students are going to school for another two more days.

The school district has the holiday break starting this Wednesday the 21st, and ending Wednesday, January 4th. The district says the "broken up" break helps attendance stay up. For other school districts like Florence, Marion and Darlington- it's the opposite. The students are on break right now, as the Darlington district says when there are shorter weeks they see more problems in attendance. So Darlington students have two straight weeks, and are expected to return the Monday after New Years.

That's not the case in Horry County and principals here believe this schedule may work best for attendance.

"We have the most issues is when we try to come back from January 1st and come back directly into January 2nd," says principal Nona Kerr. "And sometimes that interferes with travel."

The school district says pushing back the break shouldn't be a problem as parents get a calendar with all the holiday dates in advance so they can plan. But even if some parents had time to plan, others say there was no way to work around it.

"We will be traveling this weekend to see my husband's parents," said parent Louisa Harris. "And so we will be missing Monday. So we won't get back till then."

The district says when the holiday falls on the weekend, there is no perfect way to schedule breaks to make sure attendance will stay high. But the two days leading into break are instructional days, so students are expected to be there.
