Safety: Self-defense moves or concealed weapons permits

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF)- A recent purse snatching at Food Lion has people talking about ways to protect themselves. Some consider self defense to be the best move; others say they are going to get a concealed weapons permit.

Kelli Fisher said she does what she can to stay safe. "I always have my keys out and ready. I park in a well lit area. I do keep my purse pulled across the front with my hands around it."

Fisher said it comes down to being proactive and aware of surroundings. Fisher added, "I would be concerned enough to take a self defense class, but I would be worried to make the purse snatcher more mad and get myself into more trouble so I'd just let them take my purse."

But others say there is too much at stake. Arthur Linquito is a self defense instructor at One Punch Fitness, and he says it is surprising that his class size numbers are at an all-time low. But it's a different story for concealed weapons instructors who are seeing record highs.

Tina Doud-Kearns said, "Class prepares you to think about situations if I am pointing a gun at a live being and the potential consequences of harming that being." Kearns said she has taken self-defense courses, but she thinks people need multiple ways of protecting themselves.

Kearns said, "Gun protection-definitely interested in doing that-time doing it because people need to think about it-always need to think about what is most important in life and that is yourself and family."

But others are skeptical about carrying guns. Linquito said, "The gun is in the purse he is going to steal your purse and you just gave the bad guy the gun."

Some are turning to practical, everyday moves to get out of dangerous situations. Linquito said,"Self-defense will make you more aware, more comfortable and able to protect yourself. I train people from all aspects of life and defend against all weapons-group attacks."

Linquito will be holding a free self-defense seminar on Saturday, January 14 from noon until 2 pm at One Punch Fitness in Carolina Forest. Myrtle Beach Police say it is up to each individual to determine which method of protection is best.
