CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A former Charleston County sheriff's deputy was arrested Monday after investigators say he stole money from two homes while on duty executing search warrants.

The State Law Enforcement Division charged 43-year-old Troy Leo Capps with two counts of misconduct in office and one count of grand larceny.

According to court affidavits, Capps took money from a North Charleston home while executing a search warrant on Oct. 25. The money was found in Capps' sheriff's deputy cruiser during an investigation by the sheriff's office and its office of professional standards inspectors.

Two days later, authorities say Capps again stole money from the bedroom of a home in the City of Charleston. He was again executing a search warrant. Investigators found the money in his possession.

In the Oct. 27 incident, authorities say the amount stolen was less than $5,000 and he was charged with grand larceny in addition to misconduct in office.

Capps was hired by the sheriff's office in Nov. 2008. He was placed on administrative leave with pay on Oct. 27. After an internal investigation by the sheriff's office he was placed on administrative leave without pay on Nov. 2. He subsequently resigned from the sheriff's office on Dec. 1.

Monday's arrest comes after a SLED investigation that was requested by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.
