CONWAY, SC (WMBF) Just days after an equipment manager at Coastal Carolina University was arrested for embezzlement and its Head Football Coach ousted, a CCU Board of Trustees member has been arrested for driving under the influence.
According to online booking records with the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, Larry Lee Biddle, 69, of Conway was booked into the jail just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning on a charge of DUI. Bond was set at $1,000 and he was released around 11 a.m. the same day.
In a police report obtained by WMBF News, officers with the Conway Police Department responded to a report of a reckless driver at Main Street and 9th Avenue. According to complainants, a gold Chevrolet driven by Biddle had been swerving as it traveled north on Highway 501 Business.
It was also reported Biddle traveled left of center more than once, almost hitting other vehicles, and was driving in the wrong lane on 9th Avenue.
Officers observed the Chevrolet turn into a driveway along 9th Avenue without a turn signal. When they approached Biddle, they said they could smell alcohol coming from his breath and his eyes were glassy.
According to the report, Biddle was unable to successfully pass several field sobriety tests and was arrested.
Coastal Carolina University describes Biddle as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, a member of the Congressional District 1, Seat 2 and the President of Burroughs Company and Jostens Renaissance.
He has been a board member since 2009, with his current term set to expire in 2013.
Martha Hunn, spokeswoman for Coastal Carolina University, told WMBF News that Biddle remains on the Board of Trustees despite his DUI arrest.
She also said it was a personnel matter.
Monday afternoon, D. Wyatt Henderson, Chairman of the Board released the following statement:
It has come to the attention of the Coastal Carolina Board of Trustees that an incident occurred Sunday morning with trustee Larry Biddle.
Larry is a respected member of the Board of Trustees and the Horry County community. The Board considers this matter a personal issue that will be handled privately and does not constitute action by the Board.
There will be no further official statement by the Board of Trustees on this matter.
Biddle is also a member of the Athletics Committee at CCU as well as the Executive Committee and the Academics and Student Affairs Committee.
