Man killed after Amtrak train cuts car in half

HANAHAN, SC (WCSC) A man was killed early Sunday morning after his car was cut in half by an Amtrak train in Hanahan.

According to the Berkeley County Coroner's Office, a southbound Amtrak train struck a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire sedan at the Mabeline Road crossing in Hanahan at 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told authorities that the sedan was sitting on the tracks when the cross arms came down. Witnesses tried to get the man out of the car, but could not.

The sedan was cut in half with the front part remaining at the crossing and the back of the car stuck on the front of the locomotive.

Officials are trying to locate the victim's family. The victim's identity will be released after they have been found.

The death is being investigated by The Berkeley County Coroner's Office and The Hanahan Police Department.
