COLUMBIA, SC (AP) Nearly 250 people have applied to be the next chief of South Carolina's environmental protection agency.
The State newspaper reported Saturday that the Department of Health and Environmental Control board has begun a second round of advertisements after determining the first crop of job-seekers wasn't adequate.
The next commissioner replaces Earl Hunter, who resigned in September after 10 years at DHEC's helm. Board members hope to hire his replacement by February.
DHEC posted a second advertisement for the job Nov. 15, two weeks after the original public notice ended. Agency spokesman Adam Myrick says 244 people have applied. In 2001, agency officials said more than 80 people applied during the search that eventually landed Hunter the agency's top job.
