DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) A Hartsville man has died after the vehicle he was a passenger in left the roadway and struck a tree Tuesday afternoon.

Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins, spokesman for the South Carolina Highway Patrol, said the collision occurred around 3:15 p.m. when a 2000 Ford Mustang ran off the left side of the roadway along Mainsail Drive just north of Hartsville.

The vehicle then collided with a tree.

Collins said the driver, Steven Smothers, 28, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was taken to a hospital.

The passenger, identified by Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee as Roger Burleson, 60, was killed as a result. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Collins.

Smothers has been charged with driving under the influence, driving under suspension, and transporting alcohol in a vehicle.

Both the SCHP and the Darlington County Coroner's Office continue to investigate the collision.
