Carjacker leads police on chase into Georgetown County

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Deputies with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office assisted the Charleston County Sheriff's Office Saturday night when a carjacking suspect crossed county lines.

According to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, shots were fired at officers by the suspect.

When Georgetown County deputies were notified about the chase at approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the vehicle officers were pursuing now had flat tires traveling north on Highway 17.

Deputies encountered the suspect just above the North Santee River when it crossed into the southbound lane, said Carrie Cuthbertson, spokesperson for the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect almost collided with a deputy's vehicle prior to crashing into the woods on Highway 17.

When the deputies encountered the suspect in the middle of the road, there appeared to be a handgun on the ground behind him,

The carjacking suspect, 27-year-old Lonnie Lamar Hazelton of North Charleston, was arrested without incident, Cuthbertson said. Hazelton was released to Charleston County Sheriff's Deputies.
