Neighbors deck the halls with Tigers and Gamecocks

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Two Pee Dee neighbors say they are at war. Every year before the big game they decorate their homes with their favorite teams paraphernalia, but this year the homes have turned into a holiday attraction.

Thanksgiving has come and gone and while some families are bringing out the Christmas decorations, two families are decking the halls with tigers and gamecocks.

"This side of the street our house, hardcore gamecocks, but that side of the street that house, hardcore Clemson," said Marilyn Belk, homeowner of the 'Gamecock House'.

This neighboring rivalry has been going on for more than 20 years and it all started when Marilyn Belk's neighbor moved in across the street, and displayed a small Clemson flag on their mailbox.

Belk then put out a larger University of South Carolina flag.

"He couldn't stand the thought that I had a bigger flag so he called Clemson and had them express mail a big flag immediately... and the war started," said Belk.

You would think these neighbors have it out for each other but they're actually good friends and say the extreme decorations are all for fun.

"It escalates every year until it's got a bit out of hand," said Belk, laughing.

Neighbors don't mind the team spirit, and say the two homes have turned into an attraction.

"We heard through word of mouth that these neighbors were having dueling decorations and we decided to come out and check it out," said Ricky Snipes of Florence.

Snipes pulled over with his granddaughter to take pictures in front of the house decked out in Clemson gear.

"Cars stop all the time and take pictures," said Hope Camper who lives in the neighborhood.

But the Belk family has a new addition to their home-front.

The Belk family displays a large rooster outside in a big wooden house decorated with gamecock gear. The family calls him Sir Bigspur.

"We hope that we'll have a victory tomorrow and Sir Bigspur will have earned his big house," said Belk.

She says she doesn't expect the neighbors to get a pet tiger anytime soon.

Families from the Pee Dee and beyond, visiting their families for the holidays bring the kids by to feed Sir Bigspur. They say Carolina and Clemson have fans from all over.

"People in North Carolina have Clemson fans and Georgia," said Snipes.

No matter which team you're rooting for, they say you can never have too much team spirit.

Marilyn Belk tells us after the big game the two families will take down all the decorations and put up their Christmas decor.

The only problem they have is finding a place to store all of the decorations.
