MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) The hunt is on.
For the next two weeks black bears are fair game in our area.
Consider This:
Bear hunting hasn't been allowed in our area since the 1950's.
However, the Dept. of Natural Resources says there are now too many of
them so it reinstated the black bear hunting season.
So, if we need to thin the bear herd
then why do we need to spend millions on bear crossings?
The
DNR is requiring Horry County to install bear crossings and fencing along
International Drive to protect the bears in the Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage
Preserve. And guess who's picking up the tab? We are. Rather than going to
additional road improvements, millions of dollars from the Riding on a Penny
campaign are now going to build bear crossings.
The DNR needs to
reconsider the request. If we can have a bear hunt then we don't need to waste
money on bear crossings.
